Known for scenic rolling hills dotted with majestic oak trees, Central California has remained relatively undeveloped in the middle of its enthusiastic neighbors of San Francisco to the north and Los Angeles to the south. The temperate climate and unspoiled flora and fauna of the area encourage weekend retreats and fuel the local bed and breakfast and winemaking industries that dot the landscape.
For a young family who sought such a weekend retreat, the remote location of this 30-acre lakeside ranch property became a dream come true. Purchased in 2005, KAA Design began to master plan the property for homesteads, a vineyard, a barn structure, boathouse, and several other amenities. A phased plan has allowed the aggregation of each of these elements starting with two, 1,000 square foot pre-fab dwellings from the KAA designed "HOM Escape in Style" lifestyle product line.
The site structures share a modern ranch vernacular that pays tribute to the iconic ranch forms and include locally inspired materials, detailing and strong connections of indoor and outdoor. Landscape and site elements are kept minimal but purposeful and include board-formed concrete walls and fireplaces, and corrugated core-ten steel siding and core-ten metal grill, outdoor shower and fireplace elements. KAA's vision for the property included the branding of the ranch as "Split Rock Ranch". The naming and branding were incorporated into ranch signage, hats, email elements and site amenities - adding to the complete retreat experience.
KAA continues the development of Split Rock Ranch with the planning and execution of a 3.5 acre vineyard. Inclusive of a 3,000 square foot barn, water tank and irrigation system, deer fencing and access gates system, and coordination of soils analysis, layout and trellis coordination, and varietal selection input, the owner's vision of making a boutique "Big Red" blend is almost complete.
