Located high in the "hill section" of Manhattan Beach, this substantial property allowed the opportunity to create the ultimate playground for family and friends. Central to this goal was the desire for seamless indoor/outdoor living.
From the street, access is granted through a tall stone wall and wood gate that opens directly into a breathtaking courtyard garden. This completely private outdoor space is the nucleus of the home and flows seamlessly into covered verandahs, terraces and ultimately, through large door systems that lead to indoor living spaces.
The main living level surrounds the courtyard with living, kitchen, dining and sheltered entertainment and play spaces. On the west end of the court, the substantial pool terminates into a 'raft' of mahogany decking on one side, and the covered outdoor living room and fireplace on the other. Hovering above on the second level are four kids bedroom suites and the master suite featuring an indoor/outdoor master bathroom and relaxation terrace overlooking the pacific ocean beyond.
The architecture looked for regionally appropriate vernacular and materials to blur the indoors and outdoors. Materials were chosen for their durability in the marine environment as well as their integrity - ensuring a timeless assembly of texture and color. The use of mahogany and board-formed concrete in their natural states represent balance and contrast as well as playing with light and shadow both indoor and outdoor.
