This three-story, walkstreet beach home for a family with an extensive collection of modern art represents an evolution of KAA's exploration of California Modernism. The clients came to KAA with a passion for both Mid-Century Modern and California Modern design.
In order to take advantage of the expansive views of the Pacific Ocean from Malibu to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Catalina Island, we designed the home with an inverted floor plan. The top floor is alive with cooking, dining and living areas. North, south and west-facing interior spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors frame ocean views. Deep balconies with copper eaves shade the late afternoon sun. An interior courtyard planted with herbs allows for cross-ventilation and shelter from the often-chilly ocean breeze. The secluded middle floor includes three bedrooms and baths. Overlooking the most picturesque walkstreet off the master suite, a balcony expands the modernist ideal. Finally, the entry loggia with its smooth plaster walls and mahogany fin-like columns provides a dramatic procession from the walkstreet through contemporary gardens to sanctity.
