Modest in demeanor with an exuberant stance, the residence appears as a floating lantern along the quintessential date palm tree lined streets of Santa Monica. Set close to the beach and lots of activity, this personal retreat was designed to create privacy while simultaneously opening up to an accommodating backyard oasis. The lower floorunfolds seamlessly into the landscape with large expansive glass that disappears into defined planar plaster walls allowing the outdoors to be an extension of the interior spaces, creating an open flow. Designed to be a refuge from business formalities, the clients refer to it as the "no suit house."
The form of the house is a direct expression of the client’s lifestyles; a private guest wing, a open living space for entertaining and a remote master suite. The master suite becomes a floating place of repose as it literally bridges the other programmatic volumes. Carefully crafted common spaces evoke a chic resort as hosts and guests to engage together in the Great Room and lounge areas surrounding the pool. With a warm palette of rich and natural materials, it embodies the essence of outdoor living in Southern California.
