Overlooking the Pacific Ocean at its prime beachfront address in Santa Monica, California, the building now known as the Oceana Hotel has a storied history. Years ago, 849 Ocean Avenue was a respectable complex where Stan Laurel (of Laurel & Hardy) once lived. But through the decades the building and neighborhood waned in popularity until the 1990s when downtown Santa Monica itself began to experience a bit of a renaissance.
In 2007, seeing its potential, visionaries took control of the Oceana and began plans to convert the structure into the Oceana Santa Monica, a luxury boutique hotel catering to those who command the privacy and comforts of a home away from home environment. The hotel group commissioned a design and building team including KAA Design to conduct a $16 million renovation to offer the ambience of a private beach club, as airy as the shores it overlooks. Sophisticated, colorful décor and personalized service were to be the hallmarks of this retreat with large suites offering residential appeal, inviting guests to stay the weekend or the season.
The Courtyard is the heart and soul of Oceana, inspiring relaxation and socializing with the new lush California landscaping and the sparkling waters of the renovated pool. The new private dining lounge overlooking the courtyard and the ocean is full of Pacific flavor. The popular outdoor fireplace anchors the courtyard and provides the perfect spot to begin and end your evening –maybe with a fine California Cabernet and a showing of an old black and white Laurel and Hardy classic.
