Constructed for a couple of "empty nesters", this interpretive beach bungalow requires the most minimal of maintenance, is simple yet elegant, clean and modern, and centrally located with a privileged view of the Pacific Ocean beyond.
Inspiration was close at hand for the design team. The local lifeguard station has become a symbol of the Southern California lifestyle. From an elevated vantage point of the tower, the lifeguard has sweeping views of the beach and ocean. Similarly, the home rises above a transparent ground floor in order to leverage views out towards the ocean from the upper floors.
This compact, 2,000 square foot residence with its clearly articulated transparent and opaque volumes, takes advantage of its position on a prominent corner to engage the neighborhood in much the same way as a lifeguard station engages the beach. Iconic in its form with a local vernacular that resonates a comfortable coastal familiarity, the home takes a protective watch over its surroundings.
