Within the hill section of Manhattan Beach lies a Spanish Revival estate that imparts a rich Southern California architectural legacy with a contemporary lifestyle. Our approach was clear and simple, envision an estate that was honest to its context, represents the heart of an immediate family, and also becomes a home for extended family members and friends alike.
Through a traditional courtyard site plan, we were able to achieve this vision by first addressing an inherent complexity within the clients' desired program. Much like the spokes on the hub converging to strengthen a bicycle wheel, the courtyard serves to do the same by uniting the disparate elements of the home to converge on and strengthen a common area of activity. In this, visual and physical connections are created while aspects of intimacy and privacy are fostered.
Beyond the courtyard, white washed plaster volumes begin to define several indoor outdoor spaces where natural light highlights the home's exquisite detailing. Rich millwork details along with a colorful palette of mosaic tiling all serve to accent and provide visual interest. Beautifully woven fabrics and tapestries add an additional layer of detail and softness to the aesthetic. As an integrated vision, the architecture, landscape, and interior design unified to make this vision a reality.
